Kickin it for Katy was founded in memory of Katy Newbraugh whose life and legacy continue to inspire us to fight for better mental health awareness and support in our community. What started as a single event has grown into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that unites families, friends, around a cause that touches every life in some way. Our cornerstone event, the Kickin it for Katy 5K & Festival, is more than a race — it’s a celebration of resilience, remembrance, and hope. Each spring, hundreds gather to walk, run, laugh, listen to music, enjoy local vendors, and connect with others who care deeply about mental health. The funds raised go into scholarships and programs that keep Katy’s spirit alive .
Katy was one of those people who just lit up every room she walked into. She was fun, loving, and had a way of making everyone feel special. At just 17, she had already graduated highschool and was chasing her dream in forensics at Fairmont State University—she was so smart and determined. She absolutely loved animals, her family, and her friends, and it showed in the way she lived her life. Her laugh was unforgettable—so unique and contagious that once you heard it, you couldn’t help but laugh along. Katy loved life, and in return, life seemed to love her right back through all the people who adored her. She will always be remembered for the joy, love, and light she brought to everyone around her.
We are the ones who have been left behind. In January 2021, our beautiful Katy took her own life at the young age of 17 and changed her family and friend's world forever. In order to cope with the day-to-day struggle of losing Katy, we have raised enough money to fund the Kaitlynn Jade Memorial scholarship endowment fund for students at Fairmont State University where Katy attended college. We also recently completed a project at our local Humane Society
Our mission is to give a voice to those who have lost loved ones, are coping with suicidal feelings and to the survivors. We are glad you are here.
